Tura, November 12: Three small time traders were kidnapped by armed GNLA militants while they were going to the weekly market in Tebrongre, near Tikrikilla on Monday morning. The incident comes in the wake of the recent killings by various militant groups, which has left a huge mark on the security of the region and put pressure on the police force.
Fifty years old Dulal Roy, Manik Roy( 40), both residents of Tikrikilla and Abdullah Ali( 40) and a resident of Gomaijhora, Assam were kidnapped in broad daylight from the market in Tebrongre, where they usually did business on a weekly basis. According to police sources, around fifteen armed militants, suspected to be from GNLA, kidnapped the men at gun point.
According to sources, the same team had also been to Gaptuli, a market nearby and had tried to take another merchant hostage but the person escaped. He ,however, suffered minor injuries when a dagger thrown at him missed and hit him in the hand. The incident happened before the kidnappings of the three traders from Tebrongre.
West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh said, “We are monitoring the situation and trying to get a grip into the matter. Vehicle and foot patrolling is on in the region to try and get clues to what exactly happened. We however do not have any specific clues on the whereabouts of those kidnapped”.
The kidnappings come even as the army has been deployed to lend support to the security forces to quell the militants presence. However, with the army busy trying to ensure that things do not go out of hand in Assam, the security scenario in Garo hills are unlikely to change. – By Our Reporter
