12-hour bandh to protest atrocities against NE people

Shillong, August 24: North East Students’ Union (NESO) has decided to call for a 12-hour bandh starting 5 am to 5 pm in all the north eastern states except Assam on September 6.

The decision was taken to register its resentment over the atrocities committed to NE people in mainland and also put pressure on the government for immediate detection and deportation of all illegal immigrants from the NE region.

NESO information and publicity secretary Samuel Jyrwa said, “The bandh will be effective in all the North eastern states except in Assam where a public rally will be held at Guwahati to express our resentment on atrocities meted out against NE people living in mainland India.”

The NESO has  also appealed to representatives from the state of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and also from all the state governments of NE including MPs’ Forum to attend the rally to be held at the gateway of NE in Guwahati.

According to Jyrwa NESO has also decided form NE students’ and peoples’ coordination committee in all the cities where NE people resides so as to ensure proper coordination, information sharing and take preventive safety measures against any eventualities like atrocities and harassment to the people of the region in the near future.

NESO has will ask all the NE state governments to facilitate early reinstatement of the employees and the continuation of studies of students who had come back due to the ongoing problem. Jyrwa said, “We also demand that no one should be victimized because of this eventuality, either in academic institutions or in work places”.

Speaking about the need to respond to illegal migration in the north eastern states, Jyrwa said NESO will urged upon all the chief ministers of the NE region to immediately work out a coordinated policy to check  illegal immigrants to the NE region while appealing to the union government to take the initiatives to for convening meeting of the NE chief ministers for this purpose.

NESO will also demand stricter action from the union government to arrest all foreign nationals, especially coming from Bangladesh who have entered India with a valid travel documents and have gone missing in India.

Jyrwa said, “We demand that all those foreign nationals who have been detected as illegal immigrants in NE and have gone missing should be immediately traced out and deported.” – By Our Reporter
