SHILLONG, OCT 17: Defying the twelve hours bandh on Thursday, hundreds of peoples thronged from all the five districts of Garo hills to take part in the first ever 46 kilometre, Tura to Ampati ‘Green Tour Garo Hills Cyclothon.”
The cycle marathon, which is the first of its kind in the northeast, was organised by the district administrations of West and Southwest Garo Hills in collaboration with event management partners William Initiative and Northern United Club.
The marathon aimed at promoting green and healthy habits, preserve cultural heritage and encourage cycling in the region.
Flagging off the cyclothon at Tura Law College field, Meghalaya sports & youth affairs minister Zenith M Sangma appreciated the presence of large number of people who had come to take part in the event even during the bandh. The cyclists were later received at Ampati mini stadium in Southwest Garo Hills.
Meghalaya chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma later gave away cash prizes to the winners and runners up of the cycle marathon.
The winners of the Green Tour Garo Hills cyclothon in both Men and Women categories were awarded cash prizes of Rs 50,000, 20,000, and 10,000 respectively. Malodan Ch Marak, Toseng Ch Momin and Junswell R Marak were the winner and the first and second runners up respectively in the Men’s category while Jeckmilla D Sangma, Stina D Marak and Roshalin M Sangma were the winners in the Women group.
The event at Ampati also had other attractions like exhibition and sale of local cuisine, inter-locality tug of war, under-15 bicycle race and slow race.- By Our Reporter
