SHILLONG, OCT 14: The busiest location in Shillong, the Police Bazaar- Khyndai Lad- is now under the CCTV surveillance as the state police have installed cameras in certain locations to make the place secure and safe for the public. The CCTV is now fully functional and it has come in such a time when the law and order situation in the state capital has taken a dip.
Of late as fallout of the agitations called by the pro- Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos who are demanding the implementation of the ILP in the state to counter influx and illegal immigration, cases of arsons have been reported from various parts of Shillong.
The installation of the CCTV cameras in Khyndai Lad have come at a time when the East Khasi hills district police are on their toes to maintain law and order.
Confirming the installation of the CCTV which he said is fully functional, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang, however, refused to divulge the either the number or the strategic locations where the CCTV cameras have been installed in Khyndai Lad.
Responding if the CCTV cameras have been installed in view of the recent violence incidents, Kharkhrang said it has been installed to ensure safety of hundreds of people who throng the commercial hub of the city and the violent incidents is also one of the major reason that led the police to are also a reason for the move.
The state police had earlier urged all the commercial establishments in and around Khyndai Lad to install CCTV cameras under the Safe Shillong Project.
Kharkhrang, however, pointed out that the CCTV cameras which have been installed by the police in the Khyndai Lad area now are not the under the Safe Shillong project.
Police sources informed that other important areas will also be covered by CCTV cameras in the near future.- By Our Reporter
