Shillong, October 12: Acting swiftly, the Ri-Bhoi police on Saturday arrested the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) information secretary Eldie Newton Lyngdoh and pro- ILP activist from Umsning for making an unsuccessful attempt to burn the Sarvajanik Durga Puja Mandap in Gorkha school in Umsning on Friday.
Ri Bhoi district police said that the ngo leader has been charged for an attempted arson. He was taken to a Nongpoh court on Saturday itself.
The court has remanded Lyngdoh to five days police custody.
“He was charged in a case number 162 (10) 13 under sec 447, 436, 511, 153A (2)/34 IPC r/w sec 8A of MMPO Act 2010,” police said.
Confirming the arrest of Lyngdoh, Ri-Bhoi district SP CVS Reddy said that the ngo leader was caught from a farm house at Umsning Saturday morning.
Lyngdoh allegedly threw a petrol bomb from distant which not explode and no damage was reported.
The Durga Puja celebration on the second day is peaceful in the state. Large numbers of devotees were seen visiting the different Puja pandals in Shillong.
Meghalaya governor KK Paul visited the Puja pandal in Luckier road in and participated in the prayers on Saturday morning. Speaking to reporters he said that the festival of Durga Puja doesn’t belong to a particular community and all communities irrespective of caste, creed and religion celebrate the festival with pomp and gaiety.
Paul said that the festival of navratri is celebrated from time immemorial and the festival gives the message of peace and love among all communities. He even asked people from other religions to come out in large numbers and celebrate this joyous festival.- By Our Reporter
