Shillong, October 2: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that the Meghalaya high court has approved the state government’s proposal for setting up a “special court” which will try cases for violating the Supreme Court order for ban of bandh and strike.
This revelation becomes pertinent as Meghalaya has of late seen agitations in both Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills districts. A congloremate of ten ngos has also launched a series of agitations like bandh, office picketing, night road blockade demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state to check influx and illegal immigration.
Sangma on Wednesday disclosed to a group of journalists during the interaction at his residence the Meghalaya high court has sanctionedthe state government’s proposal to set up a special court which would try all those cases (in relation with the ongoing agitation organised by pressure groups).
Sangma said, “Everyone must be accountable to the law of the land.” The proposal of the state government received the high court nod two days ago. He also said the Supreme Court rulings also specify that sponsors of bandhs will have to compensate the losses that are incurred during the period.
The state government has directed the district administrations of the different districts to assess the losses incurred during the month old ILP agitation. Sangma said, “The losses will then be incorporated in a petition to be submitted before the special court.
During the past one month of the ILP agitation, cases arson like burning of government, private vehicles and properties have been reported from different districts. In East Khasi hills district alone more than 50 people have been arrested in connection with these cases.- By Our Reporter
