SHILLONG, NOV 4: Radiologists from the different North East states including Sikkim today converged at the two-day 43rd Annual Conference of Indian Radiological & Imaging Association (IRIA), Assam State chapter held for the first time in the super-specialty institute – North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciencies (NEIGRIHMS) here.
The Conference attended by over 200 delegates was inaugurated by the Director General, Assam Rifles Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan in presence of NEIGRIHMS Director DM Thapa IRIA Assam State chapter president Dr Binoy Kr Choudhury.
Radiology is the science that uses medical imaging to diagnose and sometimes also treat diseases within the body.
A variety of imaging techniques such as X-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine including positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to diagnose and/or treat diseases. Interventional radiology is the performance of (usually minimally invasive) medical procedures with the guidance of imaging technologies.
Addressing on the occasion, Chauhan, who find himself to be misfit among the medical fraternity, said that the role of technology in medical science is a fast evolving entity and radiology is a speciality that is highly technological intensive.
“Hence, it becomes more imperative for the medical health administrative and radiological device industry to be seemlessly match so that the common goal of providing effective medical care to the populace is made available,” he asserted.
He also said that the IRIA which was set up 1931 in Calcutta have over the years provided yeoman service in promoting the growth of diagnostic and intervention radiology in India and is actively involved in advicing various medical universities besides introducing the latest advances in the speciality field of radiology.
The Director General, Assam Rifles also hoped that the two-day conference will address all the advances and dessiminate knowledge which is the most important factor for helping the patients.
He further placed on record the yeoman services extended by the NEIGRIHMS to soldiers in the Assam Rifles deployed all over the NE and also providing fabulous medical care to the people of the region.
Earlier in his short speech, NEIGRIHMS Director DM Thapa said that it is befitting to say that the radiodiagnosis is one of the very important components of a hospital setting.
He was also of the view that the hospital if it has to progress, it has to have a robust radiodiagnosis department.
“Prof C Daniala is spearheading the ambition of having a very good department and wherever deficiencies are there we are looking at it,” he said while pointing out that there is a shortage of radiologists being faced by the country.
Stating that two people are very important in the department of radiodiagnosis – one is a radiologist and the other is a technician, Dr Thapa stressed the need to also concentrate not only radiologist but also to produce good technicians as well.
In order to address this gap, the NEIGRIHMS director also announced that the institute is contemplating to start a diploma course in radiodiagnosis and imaging to produce good technicians.
“I would like Prof Daniala to bring the proposal to start some diploma courses in radio-diagnosis and imaging so that we produce some of the good technicians,” he said while stating that radiodiangosis is finding its role in interventional radiology.
He also informed that the institute is also going to have another MRI of sophisticated nature and it is under process besides adding some other gadgets.
