SHILLONG, DEC 1: Two Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants were arrested along with old currency notes amounting to Rs 28 lakh in South Garo hills district.
Police said crackdown has been initiated against the Garo militant groups including the proscribed GNLA and A’Chik Songna An’Pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) to thwart attempts to deposit cash in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations by using civilians’ bank accounts.
The arrested GNLA militants have been identified as Sengchang Momin and Solly Sangma and police traced Rs 28,00,000, to bank accounts in Tura, police PRO said on Thursday.
The arrested militants have confessed that the cash belongs to Baichung, Area Commander of GNLA.
The PRO also informed that the police have issued directions to the bank authorities to freeze these bank accounts for further investigation.
The East Garo hills police had earlier traced and seized Rs 35 Lakh from Batsrang and Saljepa of Williumnagar on November 17. Both are hardcore GNLA militants.
The union government has also issued general alert that outlawed militant groups might park their ill-gotten money in bank accounts of civilians. Police have requested all the banks in the state to be alert of any suspicious deposits and to inform the police in all such cases.
Police have also urged the public not to allow their bank accounts to be used for parking terror funds belonging to militant groups and instead pass on information to the police in case they are forced or compelled by any militant group or anti-social elements to do so.
The effect of Demonetization in this case is that…I think if there is no denonetization the law Enforcers or the Police men will not disclose the Rs 28 Lacs but they ll distribute it for themselves.
Kudos to Modiji for demonetization.
And If there is no demonetization police ll not b able to seize that 28 lacs.
