SHILLONG, OCT 30: Over 200 people coming from the different parts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region today decided to withdraw from the Aadhaar enrolment during the first day of the “opt-out campaign” which kick started here in the city.
Launched by the Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar (MPCA), the letters which seeks deletion of personal details from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) data base will be submitted to the UIDAI by the committee.
Committee convener PBM Basaiawmoit said a total of 226 persons, both male and female have come to individually sign documents for opting out from Aadhaar enrolment during the campaign held at the office of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Jaiaw.
He also claimed that around the same number of persons have also taken draft letters for opting out for signing by family members adding that the MPCA will only facilitating the sending of the letters to the UIDAI.
Basaiawmoit further informed that the campaign will continue till Friday (November 3), for facilitating those people who want to opt out of the enrollment, from 11 am to 3pm at the KSU’s office.
Meanwhile, a delegation of church leaders from Garo Hills also met the members of the MPCA in which they expressed their interest to associate with the committee for helping people in the region especially those who want to opt out of the campaign.
These include are Rev Goera M Sangma from Tura, Pastor James K Sangma from Tura, Pastor Armith Ch Momin from Kherapara and Doni Ch Marak from Garobadha.
With regards to South West Khasi Hills District, Basaiawmoit said that people may visit the office of the KSU, South West Khasi Hills located at Mawkyrwat, the district headquarter, any day from October 31 to November 3.
He however said that for residents from West Khasi Hills who cannot come to Shillong, it is hoped that the date and venue can be fixed for facilitation of withdrawal from Aadhaar enrolment.
