SHILLONG, NOV 3: The number of people who have decided to opt-out of Aadhaar enrolment has gone up to 1,200 during the last five days.
Spearheaded by the Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar (MPCA), the campaign to withdraw from Aadhaar enrolment started on October 30.
A total of 1,202 persons, who have been enrolled under Aadhaar, have signed documents to withdraw from the biometric scheme till 5 pm this evening, committee’s convener PBM Basaiawmoit said in a statement issued here on Friday.
These letters submitted by the people from the different parts of the state will be forwarded to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and also to the state government.
In view of request received from many quarters, Basaiawmoit also informed that the committee has decided to extend the date for submitting letters for opting out of Aadhaar enroment till November 10.
People can submit the letters in the following centres, viz. Jaiaw, Shillong in Office of KSU Central Body, Nongstoin as per arrangement of Nongstoin of KSU, Nongstoin Circle and Mawkyrwat as per arrangement of KSU, Mawkyrwat Circle, he said.
The campaign was launched following a public meeting organized by the MPCA at the Khasi National Durbar Hall, Mawkhar on October 24.
People attending the meeting had expressed strong reservation against the attempt to force the people to enrol for Aadhaar despite the Supreme Court’s interim order had maintained that enrolment should not be made mandatory.
It may be mentioned here that as of July, of a targeted population of 32,30,132, around 3,15,112 were enrolled under the scheme. The enrolment figure, however has gone up to 4,63,056 or 14.3 per cent as on October 15.
Earlier, the opposition Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) had also decided to serve legal notice to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for alleged acting in contempt against the Supreme Court’s interim order that Aadhaar should not be made mandatory.
