TURA, MAR 28: The Garo hills based NGO – Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has called for a 12-hour dawn to dusk Garo hills bandh on March 31. In a release issued here on Saturday ADE said that the bandh has been called to protest the atrocities committed by the police personnel in the region.
The strike will be effective from 5 am to 5 pm.
The organization informed that yesterday (March 27) at around 10:30 pm security personnel had ‘trespassed’ and vandalized their office. It also said that one of their members was assaulted and arrested by the police without any valid reason.
It said that after persuasion from various organisations the arrested member was later released at midnight.
“We strongly suspects that the act was pre planned and was carried out deliberately against us as the Association has been vocal against the fake encounter of Sengbat Ch. Marak carried out by security personnel at Romba A’ding, near Oragitok on March 4”, said Dalseng Momin, president of ADE.
ADE had recently called for a meeting to condemn the alleged “fake encounter” at its office, which was attended by Garo Students Union, A’chik Youth Welfare Oraganisation and Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People.
The release blamed that the security forces had deliberately entered the office knowing well that its leaders where in Shillong to attend crucial meeting on Inner Line Permit (ILP). “We suspect that the police are trying to demoralize our members from speaking against the fake encounters and other police atrocities by using coercive methods. However, the Association resolved that it will not give in to such gung-ho attitude of the police”, the release added.
The ADE has demanded action against the police team, who had trespassed into their office. They have also sought for immediate compensation for the damage to their office.- From Our Correspondent
