Shillong, Dec. 17: 116 young men and women from seven north-eastern states on Monday walked out from the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) at Barapani near here as “responsible police officers” capable of tackling any law and order situation, including counter-insurgency operations.
The cadets of different ranks ranging from assistant sub-inspector to deputy superintendent of police were administered the pledge by NEPA director A K Mathur at an impressive passing out parade that was also witnessed by Meghalaya governor R. S. Mooshahary. The one-year basic officers’ training course had commenced on January 30, 2012.
Congratulating the graduating cadets, Mooshahary urged them to maintain the same discipline that they shown in the academy which had transformed them from “ordinary young men and women to responsible police officers.” He reminded the officers that the role of the police was to serve and protect the people and ensure
peace and harmony.
The governor also stressed on the need to discharge duties in a proper manner, especially since many people in the country are very critical about policemen. The officers, he said, should take care not to harass innocent people, let off criminals, and indulge in corruption since it was the biggest drawback of the country.
The officers were trained according to a well researched module approved by the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Apart from imparting adequate training input in regular subjects like police science, legal studies, social studies, forensic sciences and human Behaviour, they were also given special training in handling VIP security, economic offences, explosives, disaster management, and counter terrorism, departmental enquiry, jungle camp, rock climbing and yoga.
They officers were also given excellent exposure to latest weapons and trained in counter-insurgency operations. They were also sent on study tour to different states of the country to experience the functioning of police in different circumstances.
17 cadets were presented trophies and medals for excellence in different fields of training. F Lalbiakzauba, DSP, bagged the All Round Best Dy SP Probationer award and Anupa Gurung, SI, bagged the All Round Best Cadet Sub-Inspector award. Out of 116 cadets, 25 of them were Mizoram, 29 from Sikkim, 22 from Tripura, 1 from Meghalaya, 1 from Arunachal Pradesh, 2 from Manipur and 36 from Nagaland. (By Our Reporter)
