SHILLONG, JUNE 25: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has earmarked Rs 1 crore for cleaning up the Wah Umkhrah river. The clean Wah Umkhrah project of the KHADC will also involve village dorbars so that it can play a vital role in preventing further pollution of the river.“We have earmarked Rs one crore for cleaning up of the river Umkhrah,” KHADC Executive Member JM Tynsong told the ongoing budget session of the council which conclude on Tuesday.
Tynsong informed the house that so far the council has spent Rs 22, 19, 602 that includes the laying of the foundation stone of the project and the implementation of the first and second phase of the cleaning drive on April 26 and June 7 respectively.
Tynsong said that work orders relating to the cleaning project for the river have been issued to the village dorbars from the five constituencies including Mawlai, Jaiaw, Nongthymmai, Mawkhar and Laitumkhrah.
Under the project, the dorbar shnongs is entrusted to ensure that no direct dumping of solid waste and garbage into the Wah Umkhrah by constructing proper drainage systems and dustbin.
Tynsong said that the Council has also asked the dorbar shnongs to identify those areas where “waste-trap” is required to be constructed.
KHADC members who participated during the discussion suggested the executive committee should ask the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) CEO to direct the residents staying in commercial areas surrounding the river to stop dumping of waste to the River.
